Airtel digital TV, has announced that Airtel digital TV HD and HD-DVR boxes are now software-enabled to view standard definition (SD) content upscaled to 1080i HD. The feature will also be a free upgrade for customers already using Airtel digital TV HD and HD-DVR. Sugato Banerji, CMO-Airtel digital TV, said, "We believe that these initiatives will help build category awareness in the HD market that has an increasing number of customers trying out various options that can help enhance their Standard Definition viewing experience. The journey towards True High Definition has but just begun for the Indian DTH customer and will get further impetus with the entire production, storage and distribution chain moving to HD over the next few years." Reliance Digital TV and Dish TV TruHD already offer upscaled standard definition channels. However, users are reportedly unhappy with 4:3 aspect ratio stretching to 16:9 on their HD televisions.
